Beautiful Arizona Rain

Sunday morning, woke up early to see husband off on an adventure, and warned him of the storm clouds coming in from the west. It is now raining, I'm back in bed with a cup of coffee and a kitty, and it couldn't be more perfect. How often does one get to enjoy a rainy, relaxed Sunday morning in Arizona? Not very often, let me tell you.

Last Saturday, I took my oldest, dearest friend, KRR, out to dinner for her 35th. Hadn't seen each other in four months! We committed our most rebellious acts together in high school in Ohio - and thankfully, she moved to AZ a year after I did, so at least I have a witness. Funny thing about us - headbanger rocker chicks - is that she is now a Federal law enforcement officer, and I am a librarian. Talk about a cosmic joke! We both have master's degrees and happy marriages and own our own homes. Fate likes to have fun, that is all I can say. Anyways, we shared a bottle of wonderful wine - an Australian Shiraz, Rosemount Estate, I believe, and just gabbed the night away like old friends do. This is what we talked about....

The week prior, Husband and I ventured out on a school night to see The Cult at the Marquee. The last time I saw them was January 30, 1990, at Veteran's Memorial in Columbus, Bonham opening.(I ended up partying with Jason Bonham at Mean Mr. Mustards on campus and having an intense conversation about Led Zepplin, I swear to God...) This time,The Cult, well, they were pretty plain awful. They look like they could have cared less about playing this show. The sound was sucked - and I know the Marquee is a challenge to mix, but this bordered on just plain negligence. I saw a show a few months ago - the Atomic Punks (yeah, I know, I wince at the thought of myself stooping to see a Van Halen cover band, but they were actually good) and they sounded awesome. So I know it's possible to mix it well. They looked old, uninspired, and bored. I wanted to leave after 5 songs, because they made me feel that way, too. Funny thing - I spotted Mick Brown, the drummer from Dokken, in the crowd both nights. He must be the local Marquee barfly. He had a Barry Manilow haircut and his collar flipped up. Oh god, did I once think he was cute?

KRR had just been over to Glendale to see Bon Jovi the same week. She said the show was good, but that she gets that twinge - that "how do I ditch my husband and get backstage to party" twinge. The "how do I quit my life and start over as a rock and roll singer" twinge. The twinges that we thought we outgrew - maybe we just held them underwater until they stopped struggling, and their ghosts haunt us only when reminded. We are perfectly reasonable people (and I still love her even though she is a Republican), so why do we have these wild fantasies about running away to join the proverbial circus?

I can only wonder. More coffee?
